Skills Competition Winners

Congratulations on an outstanding season and welcome to the 2010 USSSA Baseball 12 and under "AA" World Series. Your tournament host will be Gameday Baseball, at First Tennessee Fields,and it will be our goal to create an experience that the players, coaches and families will remember for the rest of their lives. Your USSSA State Director will enter teams in the appropriate age and appropriate division of play.The tournament will be played at one of the finest youth facilites in the country, First Tennessee Fields., 7800 Fischer Steel Road, Cordova, TN 38018. The tournament dates will be July 12-18, 2010.
The USSSA Baseball program uses the "Pool Play" format in its World Series. Teams will be placed in pools where they will play a round robin within their pool. A double elimination format will be used in the Championship bracket following pool play. A single elimination consolation tournament will be held for the teams that do not qualify for the championship bracket. The exact format of the tournament, i.e., number of pools, number of teams in each pool, etc. will be set by the Tournament Director following USSSA Baseball guidelines and being approved by the USSSA Baseball National Committee.
Your team's application (CLICK HERE for a USSSA World Series Entry Form) and cashier's check or money order for the entry fee MUST BE RECEIVED BY YOUR STATE DIRECTOR BY JULY 5, 2010. The Director will then forward this material with your official roster to the World Series Headquarters: Gameday Baseball, PO BOX 454, Cordova, TN 38088, to guarantee your spot in the tournament. Your entry fee, in the amount of $495.00 should be made payable to: USSSA Baseball.

 
PLAYER AND TEAM CREDENTIALS
Your teams' Official Roster must be entered on-line at www.usssa.com.
All players participating in USSSA Baseball tournament play shall have photocopies of their original birth certificates in the possession of their team manager. Failure to have a copy of the birth certificate available upon demand will result in the offending team losing the game, being ejected from the tournament, being placed last in the standings and forfeiting all awards and tournament berths that would have been awarded at the tournament.
1.     Any player who before May 1, 2010 reaches their 13th birthday shall not be eligible to play in the 12 and Under World Series.
2.     Any player can play in a higher age classification but cannot play in a lower age group.
3.     Bases will be 70' and the pitching distance will be 50'.
4.     All players must be fully uniformed, which includes the following: Pants, sox, cap and team shirt with numbers that are non-duplicating and at least three inches in height.
5.     Managers and coaches must wear a baseball cap with team insignia and will be properly dressed. (Coaches may wear shorts)
6.     While in the field, as a defensive player, team caps must be worn.
7.     Protest on uniforms will not be allowed. It shall be the Tournament Directors responsibility regarding uniform legality. Violation of the uniform rule will result in the violator being allowed to conform or be removed from the game.
8.     Metal spikes are prohibited in age divisions 9-12.
9.     A full use batting helmet which covers the the top and back of the head and the side of the face must be worn by every player while in the on deck circle, when at bat and while on the bases.
10. All bat boys/girls will wear full use batting helmets when their team is at bat.
11. The catcher must wear protective gear: mask, chest protector, shin guards, protective cup, catchers helmet and throat guard. Ages 7-12: Catchers must wear helmet that fully covers their ears.
12. All playing rules not specifically covered above shall be governed by the USSSA Rule Book and the National League rules for Major League Baseball.

 NOTE: (Pre-Tournament Meetings)
There will be a manager's / coaches meeting at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 12, 2010 at First Tennessee Fields in the Grizzlies Den. Two representatives from each team will be permitted to attend this meeting. All teams will be required to have a representative in attendance. The official schedule for when teams play will be distributed at this time. Coaches Only.
Team credential check in will commence after the Coaches meeting at First Tennessee Fields in the Clubhouse. Team Rosters and player birth certificates will be verified at this time. Players ARE required to be present and must be in full uniform (World Series team pictures will be taken at this time). Each team will be assigned a check in time. The link for Check In Times (top of this page) will become active on July 9, 2010.
 
There will be a "Team Mom's meeting at  1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 12, 2010 at First Tennessee Fields in the Clubhouse. Two representatives from each team will be permitted to attend this meeting. At this meeting, representatives from the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau office, as well as various area merchants and area attractions sharing information regarding things to do while your team is in our area.
 
Skills Competition, Team Social & Opening Ceremonies
 
The gates to First Tennessee Fields will open at 5:30 p.m. July 12, 2010 for pin trading. The Team Meal will be served between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. July 12th, 2010. The Skills Competition will begin at 6:00 p.m. and conclude at 7:30 p.m.
The staging for the "Parade of Teams" will commence at approximately 7:45 p.m. July 12, 2010 and the actual opening ceremonies will begin at approximately 8:00 p.m. All teams must participate and should be in their uniform top. (Players are allowed to wear shorts).
Tournament play will begin on July 13, 2010.

SKILLS COMPETITION DETAILS
The overall objective of the skills competition is to have every player on each team participate and enjoy the social interaction of the tremendous event.
 

Number Of Skill Contest Participants:

* Select, at least, one player to run in the NEED FOR SPEED individual base running contest. (Any additional player that is NOT involved in the over-the-line hitting contest, or around the horn team throwing contest, may be added to this event)

* Select one player to hit in the OVER-THE-LINE individual hitting contest.

* Select 9 or 10 players for the AROUND THE HORN team throwing contest (choose 10 if you are going to use 2 catchers)

* We will record your team participant's name on the Skills Contest Score Sheet at the time he takes his turn to run or hit. There is no need to register for the contests ahead of time; just show up at the appropriate field when the contests are being held.

* We will also confirm the number of players on your roster at the time of the AROUND THE HORN contest to determine how many awards your team will need, should your team win that event. 

 

The Contest Rules:

"Need For Speed" Baserunning Contest (Individual Event)

* This is a Timed Event.

* Each runner will start in the batter's box [from the RIGHT SIDE, even if he is a left-handed hitter] and make a fake swing when the Timer yells, "GO".

* Each runner will run one time around the bases (Home to Home).

* The Timer will start the clock when he yells "GO" and will stop the clock when the runner touches Home Plate.

* If there is a tie, there will be a "run-off" until a winner is determined.

* Fastest Runner will win an individual medal.

 

"Around-The-Horn" Throwing Contest (Team Event)

* All 9 positions used.

* You may use 10 players (2 catchers) to involve more players.

* There will be cones set up to indicate where each fielder will be positioned to keep the distances fair and equal for each team participating.

* Each fielder must throw the ball from behind & near the cone to the next fielder.  This means, if there is a wild throw, the fielder needs to go get the ball and run back to behind & near his cone to make the throw to the next fielder.

* This is a Timed Event; the clock starts when timer yells, "GO".

* Pitcher in the set position initiates the throw around by throwing to Catcher 1 in a squat position ... Catcher 1 throws to 3B ... 3B throws to 2B ... 2B throws to SS ... SS throws to 1B ... 1B throws to RF ... RF throws to CF ... CF throws to LF ... LF throws to Catcher 2 (if using 2 catchers) - who must step on home plate stop the clock.

* When the Timer has the throw-around time recorded, he will yell "Switch".

* When the Timer yells "Switch", the team on the field must SPRINT OFF, while the next team to throw SPRINTS TO THEIR POSITIONS.

* You will have 30 seconds to SPRINT OFF AND ON THE FIELD BEFORE THE TIMER YELLS "GO" FOR THE NEXT TEAM'S THROW-AROUND. This means, the team on-deck to throw, MUST BE READY TO RUN ONTO THE FIELD as soon as the Timer yells, "Switch".

* The Fastest "AROUND THE HORN" time will win individual team medals (all players on the winning team's roster will receive a medal).

                 

"Over-The-Line" Hitting Contest (Individual Event)

* The field will be marked according to the appropriate age distance.

* There will be a "No-Points" Zone directly in front of the hitter, and then Single, Double, Triple and Home Run Zones.

* Each hitter will get 7 or 10 swings (depending how much time the contests are taking).

* Pitcher will throw behind an L-Screen.

* If the hitter hits the L-Screen, he gets another swing; Maximum times he can hit the L-Screen is Twice; After hitting the L-Screen Twice, each time thereafter will count as one of his swings.

* Hitters will receive 100 points for Singles; 200 points for Doubles; 300 points for Triples, and 400 points for Home Runs.

* Points will be determined by the first zone the ball touches. (For example, if the ball is hit and lands or touches first in the Single Zone and then rolls and stops in the Triple Zone, the hitter is awarded 100 points for a Single.)

* 100 Bonus Points if Home Run is hit over the fence.

* This event's winner will be determined by the most number of points accumulated.  If there is a tie, there will be a hit-off until a winner is decided.

* There will be ONE winner; he will receive an individual medal.

ADMISSION during the World Series will be $7.00 per person per day or $25.00 for a tournament pass. For senior citizens (55+) the charge is $5.00 per day. For children (6-12) the charge will be $2.00 per day. No charge for childred 5 and under. This charge includes everyone except players and team coaches. A maximun of 3 coaches passes will be issued.

NOTE: Pin Trading has become a tradition at World Series events, players will have an opportunity to trade pins during the team social prior to the opening ceremonies. Team pins are not mandatory, but certainly adds to the fun of this special event. We encourage each team to bring some small item to trade. Other examples other than team pins include..........contacting your local Chamber of Commerce for State/City pins.........contacting any Professional Sports Team in your area for small promotional items, etc.

USSSA RULES OF CONDUCT
It is the purpose of USSSA Baseball to conduct the best possible Tournament from all aspects. To achieve this objective USSSA must have the cooperation of each player, manager, coach and sponsor.

We are the guest in the city that the tournament is conducted and nothing should occur that would reflect aversely on your team, players, our host city or USSSA Baseball. Therefore, it is required that all teams in the tournament comply with the following rules:
1. Team managers must have full control of their players at all times. This means "on" and "off" the field.
2. In case of disputed play or decision, team managers or captains may consult the game official. The other players and coaches or sponsors are to be kept out of the discussion.
3. Managers, coaches and players  are not to fraternize with the spectators while on the playing field. At no time will participants be allowed to smoke on the field or in the coaching box.
4. At no time will participants be allowed to drink or have in their possession any alcoholic beverage while in the dugout, coaching bases or on the playing field during the course of the game.
5. Managers are to report any unsportsmanship like conduct or derogatory acts by players or spectators to the tournament director. The purpose here is to prevent any serious situation from developing that would be harmful to the tournament.
6. Managers, coaches, players, sponsors and teams are liable for the suspension by not adhering to the tournament rules in effect. This could mean suspension for a game, games tournament or a longer duration depending on the act of violation.
7. A player, coach, manager or sponsor may be suspended for fighting, abusive tactics or unbecoming acts that are detrimental and not in the best interest of USSSA baseball and tournament play.
8. Be careful of your conduct. Be sure that no actions occurs that could reflect adversely on your sponsor, team or region. Remember that the wrong actions of even one player can reflect upon you team an the game of baseball.
9. Any report by hotel or motel management, where any team competing in USSSA play is staying, of destruction of property or abuse of hotel or motel property will be dealt with sternly. Team mangers and sponsors will not be warned other than through this notice. Failure to pay hotel or motel bills can result in the team disbarment form future USSSA play.
10. Any teams submitting bad checks to the USSSA will be subject to disbarment.
